Creation from Chaos

I don’t know about you, but I’ve recently been more confused than an optical illusion on acid. If you’ve never taken drugs before, that illustration may be null and void. I’ll try another, I’ve been so confused that I’m not sure whether I’m coming or going?

Have you ever felt that kind of confusion? It almost leads to despair, it can certainly lead to an air of discouragement and no matter how much you try to make sense of the situation you’re in, you can’t tell up from down or left from right.

One day you may be working or parenting, in education or some semblance of normality, (whatever that means?) things are ticking over quite nicely, Meeting up with friends at the weekend, catching a church service or a natter down at your local coffee shop (pick your favourite, maybe it’s not coffee, I’ll let you imagine your spot.)

Then, all of a sudden, without warning and with no preparation… Chaos ensues. It seems like all of hell has broken loose and your whole world gets turned upside down and inside out!

So, here’s something for us to ponder; What if God orchestrated the chaos? I can feel some of you twitching now, so I’ll reword… What if God allowed the chaos?

Sometimes we can go through the motions of life and get so set in our ways and routines that we miss the plan and purpose that God truly has for us.

At other times we can become so consumed with problems, challenges and issues, our own and other peoples that it just gets noisy.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently and I found myself back at the creation story. In Genesis 1:2 the Bible tells us that the earth was formless and void, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

Now, check this out – the word “formless” originates from the Hebrew word “tohuw.” The definition of this word is – formless, confusion and a place of chaos. That excited me and I’ll tell you why – out of that place of chaos and confusion God was there, He was moving, and He was about to do wonders! In that place of darkness God was about to speak forth light and life and creation! He was about to set out the order of the heavens and the earth.

Sometimes we don’t understand God’s ways, that is why it’s key we must understand who He is, especially in times of confusion and chaos. When we understand who He is in His character and His nature, we begin to find peace in the chaos, and joy in believing what He can bring about from any situation. He is our faithful Father, the author and perfecter of our faith. He is above all things and all things have been founded by Him and find their being in Him.

I encourage anyone reading this that if you find yourself in a place of chaos and confusion, fear not! God, who created the heavens and the earth, will surely speak order into your chaos or bring order out of your chaos.
